The Power of a Photo

Image
I always hear that I should “live in the moment” instead of photographing the present, but in all honesty, I believe that photos and videos are the greatest and only way to truly remember the amazing days that you never want to forget about.  The power that a mere photograph holds is simply indescribable. It might not seem like it, but photos provide a multitude of benefits, from allowing oneself to laugh at silly childhood actions, to remembering the details of breathtaking views that one’s mind could not account for.  Reminiscing on photos allows myself to catch a glimpse of the times when I was truly at my best, and therefore prompts me to incorporate those past times of glory into my present day life. Even pictures that don’t relate to one’s current life can be pleasant to view. Over half of my middle school pictures, for example, feature my previous best friend (who I have not spoken to in several months), but despite this separation, I still love to think about our ...

Honesty Over Everything

We all know that one person who always seems to be telling lies, and we all often wonder “why can’t he or she just tell the truth for once?” Well, lying is like an avalanche; it starts small, continues to grow, and then eventually damages the lives of many. Everyone tells a little white lie here and there, but some begin to rely on these lies in order to protect the feelings of others. However, this reliance on concealing the truth becomes a habitual action that allows lies to be seen as a way to preserve happiness within relationships. But what happens when those surrounding begin to realize the constant lies that they have been told? Will they instantly forgive the individual who was simply trying to keep everything pleasant? This will most likely not occur because the build up of many small lies causes individuals to become oblivious to significant details within their own lives.  Yes, it’s important to bring as much pleasure into others’ lives as possible, but lying in order...

Sincerity of Our Society

Sure honor codes are important in school and all, but it seems as if a similar idea has to be implemented within the entire society. Essentially every interaction between individuals in this era lacks a valid sense of trust. If I leave my friend’s house early because I’m tired, she assumes I have other plans that I’m ditching her for, despite the fact that I specifically told her I was going home in order to restore my sleep schedule. It’s a parallel situation when my mom tells me to clean my room, which I instantly do after she asks. Yet, she is still sure to verify every inch of my room before letting me leave the house, as if I lied about completing such a simple task. Even within relationships, when a girl isn’t able to hangout because she already has plans, her partner will often slam her with questions in order to ensure that she is being truthful.  Yes, it’s okay for individuals to casually verify that another isn’t lying, but the obsessive actions aforementioned are tr...

How the Times Have Changed

Below I included two views that compare the life of a high schooler  through  the perspective of  an adult (left) and a student (right). The students in today’s society are too academically involved, which causes them to lose their ability to cherish the company of others. Their entire lives consist of school, studying, eating, and sleeping, which seems to be repeated each day, even on the weekends. I remember back in my high school years how my friends and I would hangout during the week, and obviously do things on the weekends too. However, today’s students are so academically busy that they rarely see anybody outside of the characters in their textbooks. Students need to acknowledge that there is more to life than school, in that they can focus on being with friends and maybe even going outside for once, instead of studying or sitting on their phones. Stress is an additional element that has been sparking throughout society lately. Students get too worried abo...

Let's Conclude the Cockiness

Out of all character traits that individuals possess, being arrogant is definitely one of my least favorite. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, arrogance is defined by “an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions.” I don’t exactly understand why some people think that they are so special and shouldn’t have to listen to the opinions of anyone else. We all know that one person who always thinks that he or she is right, whether it be at school, work, or home. The confidence of these people leaves you afraid to speak your ideas, as if you will instantly be shut down from the arrogant others. Essentially, the cockiness of some individuals mutes the surrounding society from offering new ideas, those of which may hold significance. It’s like when Swift states that he “can think of no one objection that will possibly be raised against [his] proposal” (409). I don’t know about you, but I would certainly be afraid to dis...

Stress — Will It Ever Stop?

The world that high schoolers live in today has become nothing more than a stressful search to determine what their futures will withhold, while additionally trying to navigate through the competition among their classmates. Worst yet, many students engage in extracurricular activities that they must balance with their determined efforts to keep as many A’s as possible. And this doesn’t even conclude the troubles that students face, as they have to put their endless schoolwork aside at times in order to be with their loved ones. All of these elements combined create a very common, and dreaded, feeling -- anxiety. The shocking component to it all is that students and surrounding adults rarely make a significant attempt to relieve student stress. Our society simply brushes the anxiety of others to the side, just like how society disregards the immoral ways that we treat animals, as seen in “Consider the Lobster.” Wallace questions how his audience can eat animal products without feel...

Why Are We So Wasteful?

Tell me that this series of events hasn’t happened to you before. You walk into a restaurant and find out that there is a forty minute wait, which creates your first grudge against the business for the night. Once you are seated, the waiter takes forever to fill up your empty water glass and ask for your orders, since he seemingly disappeared from the restaurant. After eating your meal, which felt like it took five hours to come, you wait some more to receive your bill. Lastly, you face the decision of how much your waiter deserves for a tip, so you review your entire night at the restaurant. In the end, you come to the conclusion that the service was slightly slow and eventually decide an appropriate amount. I’m definitely guilty of performing these actions, as well as the majority of our society. While some customers are polite and appreciative, others endlessly complain about their food being cold, not having enough ketchup, or the fact that the restaurant is too loud for their...
