Let's Conclude the Cockiness

Out of all character traits that individuals possess, being arrogant is definitely one of my least favorite. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, arrogance is defined by “an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions.” I don’t exactly understand why some people think that they are so special and shouldn’t have to listen to the opinions of anyone else.

We all know that one person who always thinks that he or she is right, whether it be at school, work, or home. The confidence of these people leaves you afraid to speak your ideas, as if you will instantly be shut down from the arrogant others. Essentially, the cockiness of some individuals mutes the surrounding society from offering new ideas, those of which may hold significance. It’s like when Swift states that he “can think of no one objection that will possibly be raised against [his] proposal” (409). I don’t know about you, but I would certainly be afraid to discuss my personal opinions with Swift after he demonstrated such a powerful persona.

The worst part to it all is that arrogant individuals are often wrong, which results in them making a fool of themselves for being so persistent with an incorrect idea. But why do individuals even find it necessary to act this way? Being right all of the time doesn’t mean anything, yet people get so caught up in always attempting to be right that it corrupts their personas. Afterall, arrogant individuals honestly do more damage to themselves than those surrounding. For first, people will instantly judge others who are cocky because of their ridiculous personalities. Secondly, arrogance often prevents others from helping the confident individuals who happened to get the wrong answer. Both of these result negatively for the arrogant people, further implying that this character trait is useless in society.

So in the end, does being arrogant really help anyone at all? No, not today and not ever.

  1. Danggg Lauren I loveeee this!! I totally agree with you-- often times, people become arrogant regarding their own thoughts when in reality, no one is ever always right. I also loved how you incorporated Swift into your blog! Nice job!

  3. I think you took this in a super interesting way, I like how you always have creative ideas for analysis within your blog! I agree with you, and it's something I struggle with because we are always told "self-confidence, believe you're better, you can win" but then when that applies to everyday situations, oh wait it doesn't..... interesting points, great job!
